Happy New Years!

Well, here we are again folks.  Another year is in the books.  This year has been pretty wild, if I do say so myself.  You can't deny that 2012 has had it's up's and down's, the impending Apocalypse that was much hyped; but didn't happen.  The Presidential Election (depending on which way you voted, was either a happy moment or a not so happy moment).  And the tragic acts that were committed in Aurora, CO and Newtown, CT.

On top of all of the happening in the news we had the big screen introduction of The Avengers and the conclusion to the Dark Knight trilogy.  Android had a big year, and Apple launched the iPhone 5 and iPad Mini as well as basically relaunching their entire line of mobile devices and MP3 players.  This only fueled the Android vs. Apple fanboy debates.  Not too mention the Appl Patent Lawsuits, and the deadline of the looming fiscal cliff rapidly approaching.

So regardless of where you are right now, we've all experienced high's and low's this year more than likely in our personal lives and definitely as a country.  Personally, I look forward to 2013 and the journey ahead of us.  I am not putting stock in our Government or our President.  But am confident that God will continue to bless in the upcoming year.

So tonight as we ring in the New Year here in the U.S.A. Count your blessings, maybe make a few resolutions.  And please be safe tonight and start the New Year right.

I'll see you all in 2013!

Happy Thanksgiving!

This year has been a wild one so far hasn't it.  With all of the build up to the elections, the results of the elections, and the resulting news of corporate layoffs that seem to slowly be spreading through large businesses that have been around all of my life.  Yet, as our folks here at home are starting to see tough times in a lot of areas, we still have our military servicemen and women overseas doing their jobs too.  Let us be in prayer for all of those in need, those fighting abroad for our freedoms and rights, and continue to pray for the leadership of the great land we call home: America.

Remember, though times may be tough; we have so much to be thankful for.
"O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good; for his mercy endureth forever." -Psalm 107:1 (KJV)

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Finally! I made an Android App!!

My First App!
Ok, so I know it's a small accomplishment but tonight I made my first Android app!  I haven't programmed anything since 2003, so I'm relearning all over again.  Using help from YouTube (Checkout Lecture Snippets on YouTube).  He has some pretty awesome videos on his channel.

Basically, it is one screen with some basic text, a button, and an empty text box.  When the button is clicked, the text box is filled with a canned message.  Like I said, it isn't much but it's a start!

Samsung and the Galaxy S4??

Galaxy S4 in the near future?
It's unofficially-official, that Samsung is expected to unveil the next in it's line of Galaxy phones in February 2013.  Is this Samsung's way of trying to sucker punch Apple.  Within recent weeks Samsung has gotten into heaps of hurt with Apple of their intentional copying of the iPhone design (which they admitted too by the way).  And only mere days after Apple releases the iPhone 5, Samsung basically teases us with their new phone.

I know these manufacturers like to stay ahead of the game and they are all in direct competition with each other, but common Samsung.  People are just now learning the in's and out's of the Galaxy S3.  And some of us are still loving out S2's (me included).  But here is the kicker, what changes will be made to the S4 that still make it great.  Or even can changes be added to make it greater than the iPhone itself?

And it gets even better, not only is Samsung no doubt trying to put the bug in people's ear who may be looking to upgrade their phone with their provider.  But also those who may be coming due for an upgrade between the end of 2012 and February.  Because buzz on the interwebs is that even though they are unveiling the phone in February, the phone is expected to hit the wild no more than a month later.  Making it available sometime in March.

As always, I'll be keeping watch on future developments.  Even though I am not due for another phone for a year still, at this rate by the time I am due for an upgrade maybe the S6 will be out. lol

Android App: Box for Android

Box for Android
This week our Android App Pick of the Week is Box!  I'm sure you have heard of Box before.  Commonly referred to as Box.com it is a sweet service that allows you to store your data and files online or "in the cloud".  Cloud backup and online file storage has turned into big business these days.  As devices become even more mobile than ever before, so do we.  People are always on the go.  And a lot of us need access to certain files while we are out and about in life's adventures. That is what Box can do for us.

Sure, Box isn't the only service that gives us this type of file mobility.  But it is the one I prefer.  Basically, here is how it works.  You sign up for the service on their website at Box.com.  In return you get 5GB's of online storage for free. You are limited to uploading files 100 MB's or less with a free account.  You can upgrade you plan if you like for a monthly fee:
- 5GB's / max file size is 100 MB's = Free
- 25 GB's / max file size is 1 GB    =  $9.99 per month.
- 50 GB's / amx file size is 1 GB    =  $19.99 per month.

Earlier in the year, Box gave it's Android App user's 50 GB's of storage for life for free.  That's why I use them.  Using the app on both my phone and tablet make it a perfect way to share pictures and pdf files among several devices.  And the files are accessible on any PC that has an internet connection.  Always remember, the limitations of cloud storage services like these are based on your network speed and bandwidth.  Obviously,  a slower connection will mean longer upload times.  However, unless you are uploading crazy large files, it should work just fine for you.

The service and the app are free.
Visit: Google Play- Box App
Visit: Box.com for more information on the service itself and to sign up.

Ubuntu 11.04 Nearing It's "End of Life"

Ubuntu
Well, it's that time again.  Another Operating System is nearing it's end of life.  And nope, I'm not talking about the April 2013 Doomsday for Windows XP users.  This time it is Ubuntu 11.04 "Natty Narwhal".  For those are are unfamiliar with the "Natty" it was the first time user's saw the Unity Desktop.  From that day forward Canonical would either have people who loved Unity or those who didn't care at all for it.  Some of us use it and have become somewhat fond of it, but still care for the traditional look of the Gnome/Ubuntu desktop environment.

Either way, if you are still using the 11.04 release of Ubuntu it is time to upgrade.  No need to panic, as "Natty Narwhal" will continue to get it's updates and security patches until October 28th, 2012.  You can still use 11.04 past the 28th if you like.  However, you will not be able to get any updates and this leaves an open security issue that you definitely don't want.  You can use the system updater from within Ubuntu to upgrade your installation.

It is suggested for the best upgrade experience, that if you are still running Ubuntu 11.04, unless you are going to do a clean install of Ubuntu 12.04.1 it will not matter.  Just backup your files and install away.  However, if you are upgrading from 11.04 here is the path you need to take.
-First, upgrade to Ubuntu 11.10.
-Then upgrade the installation to 12.04.1.

Personally, I like to take the time to do a fresh install of my Operating Systems rather than upgrading.  It not only gives you a fresh start.  It also gives you back a lot of used storage space that you probably weren't utilizing anyways.  I mean, we all install packages and after a few uses, we move on to something else.  Then these packages are left behind taking up space.

The choice is yours, but either way.  To stay secure, you need to upgrade.

A Week in Guild Wars 2

Guild Wars 2
As I mentioned a week ago, I finally made the leap from Guild Wars to Guild Wars 2.  I have also been able to log in to the game and play some almost everyday (with the exception of Monday, that day sucked).  And I have some initial thoughts on my time spent in the game thus far.  My stats as of this writing is a level 16 Necromancer with a focus on minions (build 1) and a focus on AoE attacks (build2).  Let me say first hand, I absolutely love this game. Now read on and find out why.

Probably my first half hour to forty-five minutes of playtime were a little familiar yet a little confusing for me as well. The character creation portion of the game is pretty awesome. The character is pretty much customizable from head to toe. You pick from a set of preconfigured parts and can tweak them from there. For example, you pick from a set of faces for your toon. Then you can make adjustments to things like the chin size and angle of the eyebrows, etc. This system allows for a greater range of design than Guild Wars offered.

The confusing thing for me had to be the way the skill system works. In Guild Wars, you would unlock skills by gaining experience points (like a traditional RPG). Then you would visit NPC characters and purchase more skills. Elite skills were often captured from instanced bosses during your adventures using a Signet of Capture right after the battle. Not in Guild Wars 2.
Guild Wars 2 Necro

Here is the just, you do unlock Utility Skills using Skill Points earned during play. You gain skill points by completing Skill Challenges and from leveling up. Your Combat skills are directly tied to your weapon set. Meaning if you happen to pickup and equip a new Ax or Mace, they new weapon will equip your character with a different set of skills for combat. And without equipping a particular weapon, you never know what skills you will get.

If the skills have not been used yet on a particular weapon, only one skill for that weapon will be available. As you use that skill, the second skill in the set will slowly unlock. This unlocking happens across three of the four combat skills. It's not a bad system, but it takes a little getting used too. I am used to picking what skills I want in my builds. Instead of "micro-managing" skills you will mange your inventory. Because obviously, if you had a nice skill set that you liked; you'd not want to discard or sell that weapon.

You Utility Skills cover things like buffs, healing skills, and in my case summoning minions and other Necrosis based monsters. These skills can be swapped on the fly as long as you aren't engaged in combat. Remember in Guild Wars, to make any skill or weapon changes you would have to map travel back to a city and make the necessary changes and swaps. Not both gear and skills can be swapped any time other than when in combat.

Speaking of gear, we can now swap between weapon sets. We three sets of weapons (2 slots for land based and three slots a piece for water based). This covers a primary and off hand weapon in each set. Which gives you additional options when trying out new skills. I like to use new weapons on one skill bar that I am unlocking. And my primary bar has a full, working set of skills. That way I am never stuck with just one skill on each bar.

The majority of the game world is no longer instanced. Meaning you take part in dynamic events that happen in real-time with other players. Kind of like Warhammer Online has. These events often become daily tasks as they pop up frequently and are a lot of fun to play.

Let's chat about loot. In the first Guild Wars, it seemed that I didn't come by crafting materials in loot drops from combat quite like it does in GW2. From my first fight, I have been collecting things like leather squares and Iron Cores. Which is nice, because crafting feels much more fleshed out in GW2. Forgive my ignorance on crafting, as I have only been at it for about two days now. Essentially you get the crafting recipe and the crafting materials and craft away. Unlike my brief time Aion where you could special d forever trying to successfully craft a single, simple item. So far I have bee  crafting in the leather working g profession to  make my 8 slot bags. And it has been a blast.

Guild Wars 2 ShopThe Trading Post is another endeavor I have just started playing with. I have purchased some crafting materials with in-game gold with much success. And I have sold probably 50 or 60 silver worth of the items with success. And I love it. It's like a virtual eBay for your unwanted items and loot and craft materials. Included as part of the Trading Post is the Gem Store. Admittedly, I was concerned when I first heard about this. But it seems to be a nice complement to the core game. Essentially the Gem Store is for the much dreaded microtransactions we have seen in other games. But this one reminds me of "Lord of The Rings Online" and "Runes of Magic" in that you don't have to use real world money for the microtransactions. In LoTRO you could gain Turbine Points to make purchases by doing tasks in the game or buying the Turbine Cards and using those.

In GW2, if you decide you don't want to use your hard earned, real world cash. You can convert your in-game silver and gold into Gems to use instead. So what is for sale in the Gem Store? Mostly things like extra character slots, XP boosts, locked chests, and mini pets. You can also upgrade your copy of the game to the deluxe version and get the special skills and Rytlock mini too. There are also armor skins and cosmetic items up for grabs too. But who needs those right? lol

I have heard some complaints about leveling so far. I haven't had any complaints myself as the leveling feels pretty balanced to me. Not really having to grind much helps this out a lot too. Here is my progress so far:
-Levels 1 - 10: Flew by quick and painlessly.
-Levels 11 - 14: Took a little while longer than the first 10. And a little grind was necessary.
-Currently a Level 16 Necro and should hit level 17 pretty quick at this rate.

Overall, I have no complaints about the game. Is it perfect? No, it's not. Does it feel entirely original? Not 100%, as you can definitely find inspirations gleaned from the likes of WoW, LoTRO, and even Warhammer Online. But it feels seamless and they manage to keep it very interesting. One complaint t I have been following on their forums and in-game is balance within some of the classes (like the Necromancer) where people are complaining that the class feels to weak and unbalanced. Personally, this hasn't been an issue for me. But I'm sure AreaNet will address it in due time. On my second day in the game I had already been invited (and joined) a nice, active guild that is a little shy of 400 people strong as of this writing. It took me months to find a decent guild in Guild Wars. The inclusions of Points of Interest, Skill Challenges, and Vista's are awesome as well.

It looks like AreanNet has done it again. And with sales for Guild Wars 2 breaking the 2 million units sold mark. Looks like the rest of the world likes it too.

Remembering September 11th, 2001

Today marks the 11th Anniversary of the attacks on September 11th, 2001.  I had the privilege today of riding by the place I was at when I first heard of the attacks in New York.  I was walking into my Trigonometry class at our local community college.  Today just about lunch time, I found myself in my daily travels sitting at an intersection in front of the college campus where I attended.  And it was bitter sweet to see all of the students coming and going about their regular schedules.  And remembering that 11 years ago today, life as we knew it had changed.,  Whether we admitted it or not.  Septemeber 11th, 2001 was a day that we as a nation experienced a pivotal moment in our history that I for one will never forget.

So let's all take a few moments today and remember those who lost their lives, families who lost loved ones, and the firefighters and police who all paid the price to help their fellow Americans eleven years ago today.

"The Cloud" + Gaming = Can it work?

Cloud Gaming
So this afternoon I read a story concerning a new development in "Cloud Gaming".  Yep, that's right "Cloud Gaming".  If you don't know exactly what that is, let me briefly explain.  A "Cloud Gaming Service" has a bunch of servers that they have their games installed on.  Much like user's stream movies via Netflix, a cloud gaming provider's servers would run the gaming locally on the server side and stream the video output from the game through the internet (aka "The Cloud") to it's customers.

This type of gaming solution gives players access to games without having to be concerned with upgrading their computer's hardware (namely RAM, video card/chipset, and processor) nor purchasing expensive video game consoles that try to be your "entertainment hub" in the living.  Since all the customer is coming into contact with is the video feed and sending back the controls being input back upstream to the game's server.  Sounds pretty awesome, doesn't it?

That's because it is, in theory.  Some time back I wrote a post about OnLive, and I still stand by my original thoughts that they were "before their time".  And that hopefully they could pave the way for a larger market for this type of service.  If you haven't followed the situation with OnLive, there have been reports/rumors of mass layoffs within the company.  And an ill fated financial future doesn't look good for them.

But there may be hope that OnLive can pull through with the help of Vizio & Google who seem to see value in the service as the latest run of Google TV boxes will support the OnLive service.  On top of that, if you have followed the KickStarter project OUYA, which touts to be an Android based game console, it will support OnLive as well.  So all may not be lost with OnLive.

I haven't personally played the OnLive console.  But I have played around with a couple demo's via the Android tablet app on my Acer Iconia a500 tablet.  I have attempted to the same with the Windows client.  But this is where these services enter some murky waters: bandwidth.  Yep, in order to use the mobile app with much success you need a very decent/stable broadband connection.  My network speed is among one of the upper tiers for my area; yet it is a little slower than a national average.  For me, the mobile app worked but it looked a little fuzzy.  Whereas, the Windows client would only kick up an error that I didn't have enough bandwidth to run their service.  My network speed isn't the greatest, but it handles everything I through at it with ease; with the exception of OnLive.  Even Netflix streams to my 40 inch HD television and looks good.  So why not OnLive?

For a service like this to succeed, it needs to be accessable to lower network speeds.  However, this too is a double edged sword, because bandwidth will also limit the video quality of the stream coming downstream to the client.  Meanwhile maintaining a low latency for quick response via the network.  Although I still believe this type of service could flourish.  I still think it is a little before it's time.

With all of the said (and most of it just my opinions); AMD has invested in a company similar to OnLive by the name of CiiNow.  What do you think?  Will  OnLive's tumultuous past and uncertain future mean a bumpy take off for an AMD backed solution?  Or can AMD help CiiNow take off and flourish?  CiiNow is a little different than OnLive as it is designed to be a turnkey solutions for service providers.  Meaning that more than likely you'll not become a "CiiNow Customer".  But say your ISP could become a service provider and offer a game streaming service to you as part of a bundle or package, etc. while utilizing this technology service as a foundation for that particular service offering.

Whereas, OnLive is much like Netflix. It sells the service to the end user directly.

Time will tell if the world is ready for this type of service.

What do you think?  Drop us a line at the bottom of this post and let us know!

Apple vs Samsung = $1 Billion Bruise for Samsung

Apple vs Samsung
Before jumping into this, let me first and foremost say that I love my Samsung Galaxy S2.  It is an amazing device, and probably the best phone I have ever owned (and yes, I have used Apple products before).  If you have read any of my posts, you'll know that I am a proponent for Android (mostly because it will built ontop of Linux).  And yes, I will admit that there are striking resemblances between my Galaxy S2 and my wife's Apple iPhone 4S (mostly in terms of interface design).

If you have kept up with any of the news surrounding the Apple/Samsung patent lawsuits you'll know that Apple was recently awarded $1 billion big one's for basically admitting that they copied the iPhone design.  So, I'll have to say I kind of saw this one coming.  And knowing that Samsung is getting hit in the pocketbook for their admitted plagiarism of Apple's hardware, it was no surprise that the patents will be upheld and we will probably be seeing some big changes to some of the basics of even how Android works across the board.

So what is affected by the results of this lawsuit?  For starters, this lawsuit will not just affect Samsung products, but in the end will affect Android at the OS level as well.  As obviously, Google will try to steer clear of Apple patented design traits.  No more dedicated home buttons on Samsung hardware (they were notorious on some of their phones to have a rectangular home button).  Things like app icon design will more than likely change as well just for beginners.  But things like the "swipe to unlock" bars, various multitouch gestures, etc.  This is a big deal people.

So it sounds pretty bad doesn't it?  Let's look at it from a different angle.  Maybe this is a good thing.  Maybe this lawsuit is what it took to get some innovation back into our mobile devices.  Let's admit it, for the last several years the world has laid in wait to see what latest gimmicks Apple's latest phone gives us.  And then you start to see similar things show up in other places.  So we have let Apple be the innovation leader in the mobile device market.  Maybe now is when our mobile devices meet a "theoretical" fork-in-the-road where new interface designs, new product features, and new phone designs in general could pop-up and even succeed.  Let's face it.  A lot of Android user's like and use Android because it is different than Apple.  And because it isn't an Apple product, point blank.  Yet, our devices are starting to look more and more like Apple devices anyways.  Maybe it is a well warranted time for a change.

Personally, I feel the growing pains and changes may suck initially.  Hopefully, Samsung won't outright nerf many features; simply reworking them with Google's assistance in a Jelly Bean update would be nice. Being realistic and knowing how the whole Android development/release cycle works, I think I may be living in a dream.  But eventually, we may be seeing the start of an Android rebirth that can once again make us stand back and say "That phone can do that! Amazing!" instead of the now common "Cool Phone!" posts we see on forums today.

Either way, it looks to be an exciting time for Android users.  Whether that exciting is positive or negative remains to be seen.

Now We Know Why Martians Are So Mad...

So today at lunch I was catching up on some news feeds on my phone.  And I happened by an article from CBS News entitled: "NASA crosses fingers that Mars rover won't find water".  And this caught my attention.  From a very young age, I have always been intrigued by space and the concept of space travel/exploration.  Which opened the gateway to my love of science fiction.  And now that a lot of science fiction is becoming less "fiction" and more science, I just had to read this story.  Feel free to click here and read it yourself : CBS News

In case you didn't read the article, here is a quick one shot of it.  NASA recently dropped a rover on Mars (aka Curiosity).  One of the goal's of the Curiosity rover mission is to further the exploration of the surface of Mars in attempt to find any signs of life (be it ancient or otherwise).  Most people immediately think of little green men wearing glass bubbles on their heads and carrying laser guns.  However, they are looking for any life; meaning microscopic or previous planet tenants.  Part of the Curiosity rover's mission includes it being equipped with a drill and sets of drill bits.  These bits (per the article) were intended to be sealed in a box which the rover would open after landing on the planet's surface.  But for fear of possibly damaging this equipment, a bit was attached to the rover before take off.

Supposedly, this installation opened the possibility of bacteria from Earth coming into contact with Curiosity's  hardware.  What does this mean?  Easy, we could potentially contaminate whatever ecosystem may be viable on Mars with our germs.  Well, that's just fantastic.  Those folks are NASA are pretty sharp (very smart, without a doubt); but to think that something like this was allowed to happen just seems crazy to me.  So knowing that there is a possibility that Curiosity may be carrying bacteria from Earth, NASA is apparently very concerned about "bumping" Curiosity into any water up there Mars.  As contaminating a water supply could be disastrous.

And here is why I find this story so perplexing.  Every one of these missions are extremely expensive.  Knowing the possibility that amazing discoveries could be unlocked via this mission, why would NASA not ensure that this type of contamination was not even a possibility.  Now before you flame me, I understand the undertaking of "space sterilizing" equipment built on Earth may be difficult etc.  This seems like a very basic concern to me (a very non-technical, simple mind).  I will give them the benefit of a doubt, as the article explains that the majority of this bacteria should have been killed during the entry into the Martian atmosphere.  But still, think ahead guys.

So as I sat at Burger King and ate my lunch, I got a great idea for a scene for the Big Bang Theory.  If you remember a previous episode ("The Lizard Spock Expansion" Season: 2 Episode: 8) where Howard Wolowitz accidentally got the Mars rover stuck in a ditch?  Well, why not an episode where Wolowitz gets an intership to help build the new Mars rover and they day he shows up to work, he sneezes on the rover just before launch.  And without time to cleanse the rover, it is blasted off towards Mars carrying what could potentially wipe out any life the would find?  Just a thought.

And then I had another thought.  Remember the whole thing about the Pilgrim's giving small-pox ridden blankets to the Native Americans?  Yep, know we know why all the Martians in the Hollywood movies are so mad.  Our germs wiped out their planet...

Just some of my random thoughts about germs, Mars, rover missions, and possible tv episodes... Enjoy!

Guild Wars 2: Eager Anticipation

Guild Wars 2
So last night my wife and I went on an adventure in our area trying to find the retail copy of Guild Wars 2.  And I was rather surprised that it was pretty difficult to find.  Since the games launch I have found the retail box version of the game at both of our local Walmarts, our local Best Buy, and both of our local Gamestop stores.  However, last night I looked up our local Gamestop stores online (which showed neither had in store stock available - which I know is sometimes not accurate) so I avoided wasting time stopping by those stores.

Hit up my local Best Buy (so I could the last couple points on my rewards card) and there were no copies of the game to be had there.  So as a last resort we dropped by both Walmart stores only to find two copies of the game on the shelf at the last Walmart we stopped at.  Feeling almost as good as if I won a lottery, we ate dinner and went home where I would start the installation process.

Upon cracking open the case, I found little in way of documentation (the original Guild Wars included pretty details booklets on the lore of the game) and there were two game installation DVD's.  Installing from the DVD's took a little bit, but nothing major.  Then the patch process started.  And continued to run... For several hours.  As of this writing, the patches are almost complete so hopefully I'll be in the game soon.

The patching process wasn't unexpected, I just hate that part of the installation of any MMO.  Because it takes so freakin' long.  Don't get me wrong, I love the fact that the game is being improved and updated.  Because in the end, the players benefit from this.  But it has been a while since I had sat through the MMO installation for any game.  And the original Guild Wars seemed to be a fairly quick installation, but the game was setup a little differently from my understanding.

In either way, I have no qualms with how the installation has moved along, and have yet to encounter any errors or issues.  After I get a little time in-game, I'll post some of my initial thoughts.

Guildies, Daleks, Labor Day Weekend, Oh My!

Doctor Who
I know, I know...It's been quite a while. I hope everyone has been doing fine. It is by no chance that I am making my first post after somewhat of a hiatus on this very evening. After all with this past week being a huge week in tech, gaming, and nerdism alike; how could I possibly stay away?  Since my last post we have seen all sorts of craziness pop up on the interwebs. Aside from all the political jargon us Americans are having to put up with on Facebook and the general media, we have the "he said, she said" lawsuits between Apple and Samsung (for which it looks link Samsung is in deep bantha fodder over), new iPhone buzz and talk of an iPad Mini?! When does it stop? I always considered my iPod Touch to be a mini iPod... I guess Apple has proved me wrong once again.  Well played Apple... Well played.

In other quick news, my Samsung Galaxy Epic Touch 4G (from here on called the "S2") received it's Ice Cream Sandwhich OTA update a few weeks ago...Yay! Nope, no joy could be expressed.  As it appears my perfectly good S2 with great battery life (would go almost a full day of moderate use on a single charge cycle) is now a fancy phone which lags, screen animations hang up, buttons quit responding, and am lucky to pull a 4 hour life from a full charge... Thanks for breaking my phone!! If anybody knows of a good custom ROM, please leave comment with suggestions.

In better news, this week marked the release of "Guild Wars 2". If you don't know what Guild Wars 2 is.... Then you should be fed to the Char. Just kidding. Guild Wars 2 is a sequel to the much celebrated MMO title "Guild Wars". The original GW managed to survive the development cycle of it's sequel during a time when other MMO titles were being closed down or forced to switch to a "freemium" free-to-play business model.  The appeal to the Guild Wars games for me has to be the fact that there is no monthly charge to play the game; unlike other MMO titles. You purchase the game once and access to play is free from that point forward.  See Blizzard, it can be done!

I certainly hope GW2 is able to garner the same success that it's predecessor has let us long time fans enjoy for years now. The original Guild Wars brought us a total of 3 stand alone campaigns (Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall) and one expansion that was not a standalone expansion but helped shape the mold for GW2 (Eye of the North).  The original game still has some players left running through it (I have spent some time in-game over the last several days) so don't hesitate to pay us a visit sometime. I do plan on picking up Guild Wars 2. But it may be a few weeks before I get around to it.

Lastly and most importantly, tonight was the premiere of Season 7 of Doctor Who! It aired 9:00pm EST here in America on BBC-America and will be reairing at midnight tonight. It was a fantastic episode with more clever lines from the Doctor, a special cameo that leaves more questions than it answers, and a wild start to the new season.  Even though we now only have four more episodes till we have to wait for the Christmas Special (and a new companion); this season will definitely be a big one with the season premiere focusing on the Doctor's oldest and most feared enemy: The Daleks!

Wow, all of that was a keyboard full. But there you have it. And on that note, I will bid you all a good night. And for those of us in the USA, I hope you all have a great Labor Day weekend!  Allons-y, Geronimo, or maybe even a good old fashioned "Goodnight!" will do.

This afternoon I stumbled upon an awesome video on YouTube entitled: "Tether".  Which is an emerging web series.  According to another video by made the creators of "Tether", this is the second shot at this particular series.  And I have to say, I think they nailed it.  For a web series, it looks to have a lot of promise.

The guys behind "Tether" call themselves CorridorDigital.  And judging by this retake on "Tether" (the original version is called "Tether: First Snow" which is also in YouTube as well); these guys will go far.  The new version simply titled: "Tether" is very mysterious.  As the movie starts up we meet a group of what appears to be some form of resistance fighters taking money from a family I guess to support their efforts.  Efforts of what is yet to be seen.  As the movie build's it's action we see a couple of guys dragging a body into the back of a truck which turns out to be one of these fighter's comrades.  Yet, we don't actually see what happened to him, the fighters apprehend one of the suspects.  During this encounter they see something fall from the and land in the far distance.  As the smoke settles there is a visible cable-like object stretching from the ground through the cloud cover.  Eventually we even see something that looks similar to a ship (or think a "space elevator") slide down this "tether".

The mystery builds as we meet what looks like a sick woman, she heeds a warning just before several people get killed by an alien that brings to mind a character from the Halo series.  Yet, it's still awesome.  The ending is even cool.  And one of the things that jumped out at me was the noticeable quality of the film.  Sure, it's only 12 minutes long.  Yet, it was funded directly out of these guy's pockets.  And still they achieved a very high quality film. Which is often unusual against lower budget projects.

All in all, I would definitely watch this if it were to achieve some form of broadcasting across a tv network.  And if any other episodes are made, I will definitely tune it.  Be sure to watch the old version of "Tether" too!

Effects of Tech: Assimilated As An Introvert

Today while I was eating lunch, I took a moment to glance around the restaurant and I noticed something that felt kind of concerning.  Out of the few people that were sitting scattered across the room, all of us were eating and staring at our cell phones.  A guy in the far corner must have been watching a video clip of something hilarious that caused the rest of us to wonder what he was cackling about.  Another guy sat with his head pointed strait down at the table probably reading the news headlines or an email.  Another person sat near the drink machine messing with his phone and was completely oblivious to the girl at the counter letting him know his order was ready.

Seeing this sight caused me to glance back at my table where I sat with my sandwich in my right hand and my phone in my left hand where I had a work email up on the screen.  And then I realize that I had been subconsciously assimilated into the group of introverted bubble people.  And for the first time, I simply turned off my phone's screen and laid it down on the table.  And I actually enjoyed a lunch without the need or the urge to Facebook or Tweet about my day or my meal.  For once, I did what people used to do at lunchtime.  I just sat there and ate my meal.  No cares with what digital happenings were going on with the silicone confines of my Samsung Galaxy S2 taking it's slumber on the table.

And it felt great.

So this started the thought train while I enjoyed my Cheeseburger and fries.  We have all seen those talk shows where they bring in an expert who in turn picks out a handful of strangers and takes them to lunch.  During the course of lunch they hire several people to walk through the room where specific clothes or colors.  After the meal they sit the people down and ask them specific questions about the people who were in the room while they ate.  And they basically take a poll as to what people actually paid attention to when out and about in the everyday world.  In a very real world possibility, what if someone was attacked or robbed during my lunch hour in the place I ate.  Would I be able to help the authorities with a description of either the victim or the bad guy?

And I realized that I wouldn't have a clue.  And that the half a dozen other people in the room would be just as clueless as I was.  Not to say that we have to walk around suspicious of everybody.  But my point is that we should be aware of our surroundings.  And yet, with my nose stuck in the screen of my phone, I am not very aware.

The second thought than ran through my head was that I was loosing time.  Precious time that I could never regain.  Seconds which turn into minutes of phone usage at a time.  Sure, I may be learning something from a news article to finishing up that last work email as my sandwich is being made.  But those seconds fall into the bottom bucket of lost time that we will never regain.  And I know I would be amazed at just how much time I use everyday working/playing on my phone.

And the last thought that ran through my head was about how much my technology has turned me into an introvert.  By nature, I am an outgoing person who likes to interact with people.  But I am increasingly finding myself drawn into Twitter and Facebook.  And before you jump to conclusions and say how these are "social" networks, let me explain myself.  When I use both Twitter and Facebook, I find myself browsing other people's posts more than what I spend in time making my own posts.  Therefore, I'm just being nosey and not really interacting with anybody.  As interacting is defined as "Act in such a way as to have an effect on another; act reciprocally" (from the Meriam-Webster Dictionary).  And just by looking around, I am not directly effecting anybody of anything to encourage someone to reciprocate and cause an "interaction".

So before I wrap up this post on my rambling musings, let me ask: "Is our technology turning us into introverts? I completely understand that there are introverted people by nature.  And have absolutely nothing against these folks.  But in general, how is the technology we deal with on a daily basis affecting our socialization with others in our society?

In other words, put the phone down at lunch.  You'll be amazed at how liberated you feel.  And on that note, it is almost time for me to unplug for a week and go on vacation in the Western Carribean!  See you when I get back!

HP Is Certifying Ubuntu on their Proliant Server Hardware

Ubuntu
Mr. Mark Shuttleworth announced that HP will start certifying Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on it's Proliant Server product line.  What does this mean for customer's who are using Proliant hardware?  It means that HP will no longer invalidate a product warranty because you slap Ubuntu on it's storage as opposed to the standard Windows Server Operating System.

If you are familiar with Linux, you will know that Ubuntu is a great server operating system and it's demand and use is constantly growing.  So, kudos Cannonical; good job in getting some corporate backing.  Here's the kicker, HP's reputation hasn't been the greatest over the last while.  So hopefully this won't hurt Cannonical's decision.  And if you remember, this is not the first time a hardware company has jumped into the Ubuntu arena.  Several years ago, Dell offered a line of computers that came preloaded with Ubuntu (other companies followed suit to a small extent) and they publicized the fact that you could buy an Ubuntu powered machine from them.  However, that PR seemed to fade away about as quick as it showed up.  Hopefully, the same thing won't happen this time around.

And HP isn't just certifying Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on new hardware either.  This also applies to existing Proliant hardware that is already in the field.  So if you are an IT manager at your business and have a need for the Ubuntu Server OS and are running a Proliant product, you should be good to go.  So break out those Ubuntu guides, you may see a growing area in the IT world.

As a huge Linux fan and an Ubuntu user myself, I am glad to see companies like HP getting behind them.  As we near closer to the future of Windows, it is only evident that other options may be just as viable as Microsoft's server offerings as surely things in the Windows Server OS will start to evolve and change as well over time.  Maybe corporate user's will see the need to Ubuntu powered servers in their solutions.  This would be great for Ubuntu, and possibly even great for the open-source community as a whole.  Think about it, with Ubuntu Servers comes the need for companies to have staff who know how to work with it.  And with more "professional" backing, maybe a higher quality of open source software packages would become available to the Ubuntu community.

Here's to you Ubuntu!  Swing by Cannonical's website for more information: http://www.canonical.com/

The Amazing Spider-Man

Admittedly, I wasn't exactly excited to hear that yet another Spidey movie was in the works.  Personally, I grew up with the Spider-Man that could organically created his own webbing and all of the classic baddies from Spidey's world.  However, after seeing one of the latest trailers to drop.  I can actually say I am looking forward to this take.

The cast looks amazing and we get a bad guy that hasn't been done on film yet.  Instead of a complete reboot where we see another take on the Green Goblin or even the Hobgoblin; we get Lizard.  And I have to say he looks pretty cool.  So, if you haven't seen the Japanese trailer, check it out as it shows off some new footage.

Enjoy!

App Review: Dark Legends by SpaceTime Studios

Dark Legends MMO
Last week we mentioned that SpaceTime Studios has rolled out their newest title in the line of their "Legends" mobile games.  The significant point to be made with this game is that this marks the first time an MMO has been simultaneously released for both Mobile Devices and the Desktop Computer.  Pretty cool!

If you are familiar with SpaceTime Studio's other games (Star Legends and Pocket Legends) you kind of know what to expect as far as character design is concerned.  But let me go on the record to say that this game is nothing like it's previous two namesakes.  For one, this title is a great deal more violent than their previous titles.  Sure, Pocket Legends and Star Legends involve a great deal of fighting and combat.  But neither of them dump buckets of blood during a session of gameplay.  This title does.  Enough with the intro, let's jump in and see how this game stacks up.

Dark Legends
Story:
Your character is a newly sired vampire in a world where people are aware that vampires exist thanks to innovation in technology.  Now the humans are hunting the Vampire Nation using said technology and the Dark Arts (hence the appearance of all the monsters in the game).  And it is your job as a new member of the Vampire Nation to take up arms and fight.

Honestly, this is a new take on the whole Vampire legend as far as I know it.  It is a somewhat simple storyline but it's great because that is all you need to know to understand what goes on in the game.  No further explanation is needed.

Graphics & Sound:
As mentioned above, the character designs are the cartoony and fun designs that we have come to expect from SpaceTime Studios.  Unlike SpaceTime's previous two games that we full of color, Dark Legends is much darker.  Given it's source material it has be portrayed this way.  And I can honestly say the atmosphere in the game is great.  It's that dark, but not too creepy dark.  The levels are designed in a way that rewards short bursts of fast gameplay, which we will get too shortly.

Sounds is pretty good.  You get all the fanfare you would expect from hearing the sounds of the onscreen baddies to your attacks doing their job.

Gameplay:
Dark Legends GameplayThe gameplay is pretty good overall.  The action during the combat missions is great and a blast to play through.  You will find yourself running around slicing and dicing evil fiends very quickly as this game has a pretty small learning curve and does pretty well to get you playing pretty quick.  The earlier "training" type missions are solo missions.  So they are pretty easy.  After you complete that handful of early missions you'll be able to play with other people as you run through the combat missions.  Playing with others is a lot more fun as it gives you a sense of being a "team player".

My only complaint (and it may be I just overlooked this) is that the interface feels a little cluttered and right out of the gates there was a little confusion about what certain icons were telling me.  Although it is easy enough to figure it out as you play through the earlier levels.

The game is made up of basically two types of missions: combat and search type missions.  The combat missions are pretty straight forward.  Run through a map either solo or with others and kill pretty much anything that moves.  Most of the area's have a type of boss character at the end that may take some work to kill earlier on.  But as you progress and your character gets stronger, even these enemies go down fairly quick.

The search missions aren't actually playable missions at all.  Instead you simply tap the mission icon on the map and watch an animation (or cutscene) to see what happens.  Personally, this was a little off putting the first couple of times I played through these particular missions.  Some missions involve watching your character "Glamour" an NPC to charm information from them.  While others involve watching your character look through a pile of rubble or even breaking into a tomb of vampire's lair.  Personally, I feel like the search missions could have been a little more.  Maybe something like a puzzle of mini-game to break up the monotony of fighting through every mission.  But nonetheless, these missions serve the purpose of furthering the story more than gameplay.  After playing through a few levels you get used to them and it makes you look forward to the combat missions all the more.

Energy is one of the hot topics among the players of this game.  Some like it, some don't. Here's the deal, you essentially have a limited amount of energy.  From what I gather, each mission requires a certain amount of energy points in order to play it.  Not enough energy?  Simply redeem your in game platinum for more or step away from the game for a little while and let your energy build back up for free.  Personally, I like this feature as it forces me not to burn up all afternoon playing the game.  This does prevent marathon play for those who like to play that way.  But for me, not a big deal.

Skills:
As the game thus far that I have played it plays fairly linear you level up and acquire new skills automatically as you play.  One of the nice things about the game is that there is very little emphasis on customizing stats.  A lot of people tend to get lost when it boils down to getting a better character because you have juggled stats and numbers to do so.  This free's up the player to do more playing and earn new costumes for you character as you play.

Multiplayer:
As mentioned above, the early missions force you to play solo in order to learn the game.  After those missions you can jump into playing with other people.  And that is where this game shines.  There is no bloat or crap to deal with.  You simply jump in and run the mission assisting others.  Which turns out to be a lot of fun.  This game boasts to be an MMO but it feels more like a hack & slash co-op title to me.  With that being said, there is a PvP aspect to the game as well; however, I haven't actually tried it out yet.

Overall:
Dark Legends for AndroidIf you are looking for a fun coop style game to play on either your mobile device or in your web browser.  Than Dark Legends is a must have.  It is free to play.  Although there are plenty of opportunities to swap real world cash for in-game items if you so choose.  But it is not forced to shell out your hard earned cash, which is nice.  Also, a lot of free to play games (especially on mobile devices) are riddled full of advertisements that get in the way.  And so far, nothing like that has popped up for me.

If you don't mind having limited access to energy points to delegate you play (which I don't mind at all) you should have a blast in this game.  So far I have, and I am not that big a fan of vampire related games.  But this one does it right.

One side note that I'd like to make is just some simple advice.  I would recommend this title to the older crowd as some of the source material is a little too mature for children.  With this being said the Google Play Market page for the game shows "High Maturity" for the Content Rating.

Rating:  4 out of 5 stars!
4 out of 5 stars

Pro's:
-Fun multiplayer
-Great gameplay
-Easy to find people to play with.
-PvP is available
-Character customization is basically equipping crystals and costumes.

Dark Legends is Out!

Dark Legends
For all of you mobile gamers out there, a new title has hit the web from the likes of SpaceTime Studios.  That's right, they are the great folks behind the much loved "Pocket Legends" and the newer "Star Legends" titles.  Their newest title is called "Dark Legends".  And after having some hands-on time last night with the game, I can say it is definitely a lot grittier than their two previous games.

Here is the deal, you play a newly sired vampire in a gothic/urban city setting where normal humans are aware of the vampire's existence.  You have to fight to survive.  And you are fitting off all kinds of creatures from zombies to demons, it's the full gamut.  It has the feeling of a SpaceTime Studios game in the character design.  It has a cute but dark feeling about it.  And at times it feels a lot like a cooperative hack-&-slash game.  Which is pretty cool.

One of the big deals about this game is that it is the first MMO title that was released simultaneously for mobile and desktop play via Google Play for mobile devices and the Chrome Web Store for desktops.  And the game is a free to play title.  So don't hesitate to jump in and have fun.

Guild Wars 2 up for PreOrder Now!

This week was a big week especially for gamers!  Not quite sure what I am hinting at?  Let me expound, this week pre-sales started for the much anticipated Guild Wars 2!  This game has been a long time in the making and ArenaNet has been teasing those of us who cut our teeth on the first Guild Wars with screens and videos and even beta testing for some (but unfortunately no beta testing for me).  So how much is it? What do you get for preordering? Is there a Collector's Edition?  And when does it hit the street?

Let's break it down.  For $59.99 you can preorder the standard game.  All preorder customers get the following perks:
-Beta Access to ALL GW2 beta events.
-A Three Day Headstart Access when the game releases.
-The Hero's Band ingame item.

For $79.99 Digital Deluxe Edition you get the above three perks and:
-The game.
-Summon Mistfire Wolf Elite Skill (ingame).
-Miniature Rytlock pet (ingame).
-Golem Bank (lasts for 5 days - ingame).
-Chalice of Glory (earns extra Glory and it a one time use item - ingame).
-Tome of Influence (guild stuff - ingame).

And the ubersweet Collector's Edition ($149.99) will include all of the above goodies, perks, and ingame items, as well as:
-10 inch Rytlock figurine.
-Book: "Making of Guild Wars 2"
-Custom Art Frame
-Art Portfolio and 5 Art Prints
-Best of Guild Wars 2 Sountrack CD

Sounds pretty freaking sweet!  As an avid fan of the original Guild Wars, I can honestly say I have been awaiting the arrival of it's sequel for some time now.  And I have a renewed desire to jump back in the original and try to finally fill up my Hall of Monuments (which is a little on the bare side).

Here's the kicker, there still isn't an official release date other than they are aiming for a 2012 release.  I have been burned in the past on game preorders.  So it is unlikely that I will partake of the preorder process.  However, seeing the preorders being opened up is huge news for a game that we have waited on for so long now.

So if preordering is up your alley be sure to swing by their website: https://buy.guildwars2.com/

Getting the Word Out: The Amazing Power of the Web

This is a befitting post, seeing as how it has been a while since a new post has gone up here on the site. Years ago now (it feels like); we started seeing buzzwords like: "Web 2.0", "Dynamic Content", "User Created", etc.  And I heard several interviews and read several stories on tech reports/commentators saying the internet would eventually gravitate towards a more friendly space for user created content.  And then sites like YouTube popped up.  Even being what some considered to be fly-by-night fads in pop culture.  I mean seriously, who wants to see videos of people doing stupid things? lol

However, as time has moved on and the technology evolved; it is becoming more accessible to create your own content without a doubt.  And throughout the growth of media sharing sites and resources we have seen an infancy of this "Web 2.0".  Where teenage girls cry because their pop star crush got committed to rehab, or yet another skateboarder kid grinds his skateboard off of a roof and into the bushes or a pool.  Sure, we may get kicks out of those kinds of videos.  But that isn't what it's all about.  And people are starting to stand up and take notice.

I find it simply amazing that we have access to the venues that have only previously been available to those who could buy it.  Think back to even 12 years ago (year 2000).  The web was still basically used for checking email, news, looking at static web pages (for the most part), and the start of widespread online gaming.  Where news and television networks pretty much owned to media outlets.  Now flash forward to today, 2012.  Everything from televisions, phones, books, and even certain refrigerators are web connected.  Our phones have WAY more power than the technology used to put man on the moon.  And we carry them in our pockets and purses.  And technology is continually growing and information is literally everywhere.

Yes, we have gone way past the point of technology "pissing contests" and trying to see who has the faster desktop computer or the best graphics card or the most RAM when compared to our buddies computers.  Instead, technology has become much more of a "meta" (for lack of a better word) experience.  Meaning most of us are constantly connected and sharing something with someone or a group of someones.  Even if your content seems trivial, you are sharing it.  Posting to sites like Facebook, Twitter, chatting online with friends, video chatting, or even making videos for YouTube.  And in the process you are adding your information, experiences, and memories to a giant database which is becoming our present-history.  Today's children will continue to build upon the foundations of concepts like social networking, media creation, and communication and at the rate in which this technology is growing...We may not even recognize this foundation in another 30 years.  So what are we going to leave for them to grow from.  Videos of another "Baseball Nut Shot" or someone ranting because they are obsessed with a singer.  Why not leave something more meaningful?

These are just some simple musings and observations I have made over the last several weeks when browsing through YouTube and looking at sites like Facebook.  And one thing I have noticed with all of these social/media venues is: we all have a voice.  And one thing we want, is to be heard.  Maybe it's the old saying of "everybody wants their 15 minutes of fame".  But maybe nowadays, this statement should be revised.  Maybe it should be: "we all have a story" or something similar.

I have said all of that to say this.  The web isn't in it's infancy anymore.  And it hasn't been for some time.  But it seems that people are starting to really wake up and see what tools we have available.  Twenty years ago we relied on broadcasting talents like Walter Cronkite and Peter Jennings to give us the important news we needed to know about.  In our local communities our Sunday Newspapers were to the source of "What's Happening?".  But not anymore.  Now we look to sites like Google to tell us what we need to know.

Yet again now, in 2012; anybody with a cell phone or a computer/tablet with internet access can break news stories anywhere in the world.  And within a portion of a second, they can fire out a quick note about what is going on to be seen by potentially millions of people all over the globe.  People who are considered well versed or experts in their crafts suddenly have an outlet for teaching others their professions and passions.  People whose writings would have only ever seen the inside of a spiral bound notebook and probably stuck in a box or thrown away years later; now have a place to publish their work and have an equal chance at gaining notoriety with a whole community of fans or unsuspecting peers.  This is the power we have at our finger tips now.

And I leave you with the words of Spiderman: "With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility" and this has never been more fitting than it is now.  Sure, we can use these social media outlets for fun.  And that's a big part of it.  But if you have continued to read this post to this point, I call you to action to keep an open mind and maybe see how you can contribute (in a positive way) to our current web.  Share something encouraging with someone else on Facebook (publicly), or find your passion and use the web to teach others.  And you may find that your voice speaks more volume than you may have ever known.

Manually Setup a Dual Boot with Ubuntu & Windows 7

This video is a response to some questions I have recently received concerning setting up a dual boot system.  I have covered this topic in two other videos/blog posts.  However, both of those videos approached this goal by two different methods as does this video.  Previously we setup our dual boot with 'Wubi' and by using the 'Side-by-Side Install' method.  But what happens if you are using an older Ubuntu Live CD or a different Linux Distro entirely?  Those options may not necessarily work for you.  In this case you'll need to manually setup the partitions and let Ubuntu install to a new, empty partition.  So how do we do this?

There are a few things you need to do first.  And these are good things to do even when setting up your dual boot via the ways we have already covered.
#1- Defrag your computer.
Why? Easy! When you use your computer on a daily basis files and data become fragmented.  This simply means that the data is becoming somewhat scattered across the free space of your hard drive.  This adversly effects your hard drive in that it may slow down read/write times of your drive in relation to your computing tasks and it can take up excess hard drive space.

By running a defrag on your hard drive, a lot of this fragmentation will be cleaned up.  So in short, even if you have no plans to dual boot; running a defrag every once in a while is still a good idea.

#2- You'll more than likely want to have Windows installed first. The installation of GRUB tends to play along better if it can see Windows first.

#3- If your Windows install isn't a freshly installed version, you will want to backup any important data on your Windows machine.  Just in case things go south or you accidentally format the wrong partition, etc.  Believe me, things like this can happen if you're not cautious during these installs.

If you're good to go with the precautions mentioned above, then follow along with the video:

How to Burn A Live Linux CD

I have recently received a batch of emails asking the same question: "I've downloaded the Linux .ISO file, now what do I do?".  So in response to this question, I have made a video stepping through the process of using ImgBurn to make a ready-to-go Live Linux CD with your Operating System of choice.  And then testing it to make sure it boots up.

There are numerous burning programs out there that can accomplish what we are trying to do in this video.  However, I have personally been using ImgBurn since I first started playing around with Linux.  For me, it gets the job done quickly and without other excess crap or bloat.

Just make sure you're speakers are turned down when the 'Job Complete' sound plays.  It'll scare the crap out of you. lol

To follow along with this video you will need 2 things: ImgBurn and a Linux .ISO file.
For ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com
For an ISO File: http://www.distrowatch.com

If you visit Distrowatch for your ISO file, be sure to pick the distribution you like best, and on that distribution's page find the links to the ISO file.  In most cases there will be two files, one is a 32bit version and the other will be a 64bit version.  Be sure to pick the appropriate version for your computer.

Once you have ImgBurn installed and have downloaded an ISO file to work with, have fun!

Android App Review: AirDroid

After what feels like a really long time, we are back in the saddle again with a app review for an awesome little Android app that just happens to also be free!  It's named: AirDroid.  Basically, the concept behind AirDroid is simple.  It allows you to access the contents of your Android phone via a Wifi internet conncection just as if the phone was directly connected to the computer via a USB Cable.

This is accomplished by using a pretty slick looking web interface.  Essentially here are the steps to using AirDroid.
1- Turn on your phone's Wifi Connection and connect to your router.
2- Launch the AirDroid app on your phone or tablet.
3- Press the blue 'Start' button.
4- Enter the IP Address in your computer's web browser address bar.
5- At the Web Login Screen type in the password given to you from the app.
6- Your in!

Once inside the AirDroid web interface, you can launch various file manager type dialog boxes to move files to your computer from the phone or vice-versa.  If you need to backup anything like your music, pictures, and even apps; all this can be done quickly and easily.  In my example, I was able to backup all of my pictures to my Desktop computer in the form of a .ZIP file for extraction later.  And it took a couple of seconds to get it done.

The price of AirDroid is great considering it is free.  But even if the devs decided to start charging for it, I'd happily pay a couple of dollars for this type of app.

We Oppose SOPA/PIPA

In the spirit of all of the publicity from the SOPA/PIPA blackouts today, we at TechieSmarts want to go on record to say that we do oppose SOPA/PIPA.  As you all probably know and understand the 'goal' of both the SOPA and PIPA proposals are to combat piracy.  However, what this really means are restrictions would be placed on webhosts, service providers, and even users that are so vague and loose that they very hint of anything potentially copyright-infringing could land all of the above parties in deed legal crap.

As with other anti-piracy attempts (like DRM), these proposals will hurt those who try to use the web in all sense of honesty.  Those who choose to pirate or copyright materials will just find another way to do it.  So we are only hurting ourselves if we as user's of the internet don't make our voices heard.  These proposals go way larger than what I have the time or space to go into on this simple blog.  But don't be snowed on the idea that this is a beneficial thing; because it is not.

We all know the entertainment industry are huge supports of SOPA/PIPA.  So let's look at it this way.  Would you let the entertainment industry run other aspects of your life?  I know I wouldn't.  So why would we want to stand back and let them tell us how to use our internet access? After all, instead of fighting piracy, this is actually what they will be doing.
