Microsoft's False Alarm

For those of you out there running the Microsoft Security Essentials free antivirus solution from Microsoft and running the Chrome Web Browser from Google, your web browser may kick up a false positive for a virus scan.  So what was happening?

Apparently, due to a 'bug' in their latest batch of virus signatures/definitions that incorrectly tagged the Chrome web browser as the "PWS:Win32/Zbot" virus and proceeded to either block or in some cases completely remove the web browser altogether.  Nice one Microsoft.  We know you're not happy that you're loosing people to other web browser usage; but seriously, this is a little overkill.

As typical with Microsoft a patch was quickly issued; which resolved the false positive report.  Likewise, it was available as a manual download as well.  However, the patch doesn't bring Chrome back.  It only fixes Microsoft's Security Essentials from detecting Chrome as a virus.  User's will have to manually install Chrome again if they want it back or they can wait about 24 hours and Google will attempt to restore Chrome to those who were adversely effected.

If you were affected by this issue, then:
1- Go into your 'Control Panel' and double click on 'Add/Remove Programs'
2- Make sure Chrome has been removed (or isn't visible in the list of programs); if so, then Remove it.
3- Visit http://www.google.com/chrome and re-download the Chrome Web Browser.
